Sculpting the Past – Exploring the Art and History of George Sutherland & Sons, Sculptors, Galashiels.

An illustrated talk by Alison Stewart Martin, the great grand daughter of George Paterson Sutherland, the founder of George Sutherland & Sons, Sculptors, who has created an exhibition in Galashiels Library from family archives which accompanies this talk.

Founded in 1881, this business ran for three generations and 118 years, becoming the foremost sculptors and monumental masons in the south of Scotland.

Their carving craftsmanship can be seen all over Galashiels, and on headstones and War Memorials across the whole of the Borders.

This talk also illuminates the family history across two world wars and their inter relationship with Sir Robert Lorimer, architect.

This talk is accompanied by the author’s exhibition in Galashiels Library.
